A VPN router for Swedish TV in the whole home

Updated · Läs guiden på svenska

Phones and tablets are easy: install an app, tap Connect, done. But most people want to watch Swedish TV on the big TV in the living room, and that is often where it stops. Many smart TVs and IPTV boxes cannot run VPN apps at all. The solution is a VPN router. Here we explain how it works, how to connect it and when it is the right choice.

What is a VPN router?

A VPN router is a small router that connects to your normal internet. It creates its own Wi-Fi, and everything that connects to that network is sent encrypted through a VPN server. With Grip VPN the traffic goes through Sweden, so every device on the router's Wi-Fi gets a Swedish IP address without you installing anything on it.

That means your smart TV, IPTV box, games console, Chromecast and your guests' phones behave as if they were connected in Sweden.

When is a router better than an app?

  • Smart TVs without a VPN app. TVs from brands like Samsung and LG usually have no VPN app to install.
  • IPTV boxes. Boxes such as TVIP and similar are built for playback, not for VPN apps.
  • Many devices. One router covers everything in the home at once, instead of signing in on every gadget.
  • The family. Nobody has to remember to turn on the VPN app. Anyone on the router's Wi-Fi has a Swedish IP address.

If you only have an Apple TV, the Grip VPN app is often enough – you sign in to it at gripvpn.com/aktivera.

How to connect the Grip VPN router

Our router is delivered pre-configured and linked to your Grip VPN account. 12 months of VPN are included.

  1. Connect the router to your normal internet. Plug a network cable between the router and your existing router or fibre box, and plug in the power.
  2. Wait a minute or so while the router starts and connects to Grip VPN.
  3. Connect the TV or box to the router's Wi-Fi using the name and password supplied.
  4. Start the app you want to watch in. The TV now has a Swedish IP address.
  5. Add more devices by connecting them to the same Wi-Fi.

Your phone and computer can stay on your normal Wi-Fi if you only want a Swedish IP on the TV.

What should I keep in mind?

  • Speed depends on the internet where you live. The router cannot make a slow connection faster, but WireGuard loses very little speed. For HD streaming, the most important thing is a connection that stays stable, also in the evening.
  • Placement. Put the router close to the TV or box for the best Wi-Fi.
  • The services' terms. A Swedish IP address does not change a service's rights or terms, and some services, such as TV4 Play, do not allow VPNs. Read TV4 Play abroad and Watching SVT Play abroad.
  • Shipping. We ship the router to most countries. The shipping cost is shown at checkout.
  • Right of withdrawal. You have 14 days from receiving the router to change your mind. You then pay the return shipping.

Who is the router for?

  • You who live abroad part of the year and have a smart TV or IPTV box in your home there.
  • Families where several people want to watch on different devices without signing in on every gadget.
  • You who want it simple: plug it in once and let it look after itself.

If you mostly travel for shorter periods and stay in hotels, the app on your phone, tablet and Apple TV is usually more convenient.

Router or app – which should I choose?

If you mainly use a phone, tablet and Apple TV, a normal period with the apps is enough. See the pricing page. If you want Swedish TV on a smart TV or IPTV box, or want the whole family covered without hassle, the VPN router is easiest. You can also combine them: the same Grip VPN account is used in the router and in the apps.

If you already have your own router that supports WireGuard, you can create a manual configuration under My account → Advanced.

Frequently asked questions

Does the router work with my IPTV box?

Yes. The box connects to the router's Wi-Fi and all traffic goes through Grip VPN without installing anything on the box.

Do I need my own router at home?

You need an internet connection with a free network port, for example your normal router or fibre box. The Grip VPN router plugs into it.

Can I take the router on a trip?

The router is small and works wherever there is internet with a network port, for example in a rented apartment. In hotels with Wi-Fi only, the app is usually easier.
